Agriculture CS has said that the Government will continue to withdraw tea at the Mombasa tea auction, if the current prices will not improve. Speaking to journalists during a consultative meeting at a Nairobi Hotel, CS Munya gave an assurance that farmers will not be affected by the withdrawal of tea at the auction, as the Government is working on a compensation plan for the farmers to be paid until the prices improve. “The tea will be withdrawn from the market if buyers will not buy at the recommended price and we are confident from our own analysis of the situation, that the prices are going to improve,” said CS Munya.
He noted that one of the challenges that pushes KTDA to sell tea promptly, is due to lack of storage adding that the government has opened up warehouse facilities: NCPB, KNTC, NKPCU for tea producers and KTDA to store tea until the prices increase.
“We expect that those in tea trading will also consider the farmer and improving on pricing,” he said.
