Agriculture CS Hon Peter Munya was honoured to be the Chief Guest during the 99th Ushirika Day Celebrations today, themed ‘Rebuild Better Together.’ Addressing the stakeholders at a Nairobi Hotel, CS Munya said that Cooperatives cut across all sectors of the economy and are critical in to the contribution of equitable incomes.
CS Munya added that the Ministry is cognizant of the challenges faced by co-operatives such as weak governance, high cost of finance, inadequate market access, delays and non-remittance of deductions among others. Recently the government completed the formulation of the National Cooperative Policy (NCP) whose objective is to promote competition and sustainable cooperatives for socio-economic development. The policy will help delimitate the role of the two levels of government in Cooperative development.
The Ministry also recently appointed a task force to help operationalize the National Cooperative policy and review the Cooperative societies Act and the Sacco societies Act. The task force will also look at the entire Cooperative structure, self regulation to improve Cooperative governance among others.
CS Munya was flanked by PS Cooperatives Hussein Noor Ishmael, the Chairman, National Ushirika Day Celebrations Council, Chairmen, Co-operative Societies & Unions, among others.
