PS Livestock Development Harry Kimtai, today, at Panafric Hotel officiated a breakfast meeting involving members of the press to create awareness of the launch of the new DRIVE project. DRIVE means, De-risking, Inclusion and Value Enhancement of Pastoral Economies. This is a 5 year project aimed at protecting the Pastoral economies against drought risk, increase financial inclusions of pastoralists by better connecting them to markets. The PS noted that the project will improve financing capacity by strengthening and expanding the Government’s portfolio of disaster risk financial instruments. DRIVE shall be implemented in 21 ASAL Counties and already 21 Governors have been sensitized on modalities of implementations. The project has been designed by the Government of Kenya in partnership with the regional Governments of Ethiopia, Somalia and Djibouti under the framework of the Horn of Africa Initiative (HOAI).In Kenya, PS Kimtai said, the DRIVE project is funded through a credit facility from World Bank and implemented by the State Department for Livestock Development (SDLD) in partnership with the private sector (ZEP-RE) Reinsurance and Kenya Development Corporation (KDC). The project is expected to benefit 125,000 Pastoral households translating to about 800,000 people.
