We are intensifying sustainable agriculture practices in response to climate change impacts in order to address needs of food for the fast growing population.
Today Principal secretary state Department for agriculture Dr. kipronoh Ronoh Paul joined Cabinet secretary Dr. Andrew Karanja during an official inauguration of the National Agroecology Strategy for Food Systems Transformation (NAS-FST) at KALRO Headquarters.
NAS-FST aims to integrate agroecological principles into national agricultural policies, practices, and frameworks. This approach not only addresses environmental and economic sustainability but also emphasizes social inclusivity, ensuring that marginalized groups such as women, youth, and persons with disabilities (PWDs) are actively involved and empowered in the transformation process. By leveraging both Indigenous knowledge and modern scientific innovations, the strategy sets out to build food systems that are robust, adaptable, and reflective of Kenya’s diverse agroecological landscapes.
It underscores a collective commitment by the government, civil society, the private sector, individual champions, research institutions, and farming communities to foster resilient agricultural practices that can withstand the pressures of climate change while promoting food sovereignty and economic growth.
By implementing NAS-FST, Kenya has the potential to become a regional leader in agroecology, setting an example for other countries in Africa and beyond. The strategy aligns with international frameworks such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the African Union’s Agenda 2063, positioning Kenya as a key player in the global movement towards sustainable food systems.
Together, we’re working towards a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient food system.
