To mitigate the effects of Covid-19 in the agriculture sector, the government is working closely with her development partners to assist farmers cope with these challenges.
Recently, Agriculture CS Hon Peter Munya launched a GOK/IFAD Project in Nyandarua County, on the revialization of Irish Potato Production for post Covid 19 affected small scale farmers.
Through this Project, potato farmers in Meru, Nyandarua and Elgeyo – Marakwet counties will benefit from supply on certified seeds.
A total of 3200MT of seed will be distributed to 8,000 Small Scale Farmers; 60% women and 30% youth. In addition, each farmer will receive fertilizer and pesticides for production.
Input acquisition will be based on e-voucher system where potato farmers will access a package of high quality subsidized inputs adequate for half acre plot.
Upon full implementation IFAD will contribute USD 1,943,970. The total acreage is envisaged to increase by 853 hectares and a production of 17,060.
