Today, CS Sen. Mutahi Kagwe held a consultative meeting with the Horticultural Sector Standing Committee, led by Agriculture Secretary Mr. Collin Marangu, to address key challenges and drive growth in Kenya’s horticulture industry.
Kenya’s horticulture sector is a major economic pillar, contributing 33% of GDP and supporting over 4 million jobs. In 2024, exports hit 402,194.7 MT valued at Ksh 136.6 billion, with flowers, fruits, and vegetables leading the way.
Among key issues discussed were; Strengthening pest management to meet EU regulations, particularly tackling the False Codling Moth in flower exports and addressing high taxation on avocado exports to India, with ongoing negotiations for zero-rated tariffs to boost competitiveness.
The government remains committed to enhancing pest control systems, ensuring international compliance, and securing better trade conditions to sustain and expand the sector.
