CS Mithika Linturi is attending the 46th session of the International Fund for Agricultural Development Governing Council in Rome, Italy, key agenda being Accelerating Action for Food Security.
The CS noted that Government of Kenya through a bottom-up economic transformation model has unveiled agriculture as its top priority hence elevating the importance of food systems transformation.
The Agricultural Sector Transformation and Growth Strategy (ASTGS 2019-2029) is founded on nine flagships anchored around four strategic themes: Food and Nutrition Security; Sustainable Agricultural Sector Transformation; Trade, Finance and Market development.
To facilitate delivery of the strategy, CS Linturi affirmed that the Government of Kenya has promoted collaboration between national and county governments.
“The goal of the Government is to transform the agricultural sector so that it can respond to investments in food security, nutrition, and climate smart agriculture,” he added.
He encouraged Smallholder farmers to participate in commercial farming by embracing sustainable adaptive on farm technologies as well as quality assurance for market access in the local and domestic markets.
IFAD’s agricultural transformative initiatives have therefore been timely in supporting the Government efforts of transforming our rural communities economically and socially, as well as promotion of gender equality and inclusiveness.
He was accompanied by the Kenyan Ambassador to Italy, Jackline Yonga, Senate Agriculture Committee Chair Hon James Kamau among other delegates.
