Dr. Andrew Karanja, Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development, hosted a delegation from the Avocado Society of Kenya, led by Chief Executive Officer Ernest Muthomi. The Society is the principal membership association for growers, exporters and other value – chain players.
The meeting focused on key issues affecting the avocado industry, including strategies to address challenges in air and sea freight, the impact of new levies and fees, and import duties in international markets. The delegation expressed appreciation for the Ministry’s efforts in fast-tracking registrations and label extensions for crop protection products to address False Codling Moth (FCM) in avocados. They also urged the Ministry to expedite similar measures to manage fruit flies, persea mite, phytophthora, and other fungal diseases.
The Avocado Society of Kenya’s goal is to promote efficiency and sustainability in production and organized marketing towards a long-term profitability of avocado business in Kenya.
