The recent assent to the Sugar Bill sets the right pace for the stimulation of our sugar sector and will address deep-rooted challenges that have for long crippled the once vibrant and profitable industry.
This Evening Principal secretary state Department for Agriculture Dr. Kipronoh Ronoh Paul participated in the Sugar industry innovation symposium and Expo 2024 at Kisumu county.
Such events bring together stakeholders in the sugar industry to share and discuss innovative ideas and technologies that can improve the sector’s productivity, sustainability, and profitability. It also provides a platform for researchers, policymakers, sugar millers, sugarcane farmers, and other stakeholders to showcase their innovations, share best practices, and explore partnerships that can help advance the sugar industry.
The sugar sector remains a key economic pillar and a livelihood source for millions. Significant progress includes the operationalization of 17 sugar factories and the construction of four more, boosting processing capacity and production. In July alone, domestic sugar output reached 84,000 MT, more than double the national monthly demand of 40,000 MT, marking a major step toward self-sufficiency.
On his remarks PS reaffirmed that the future of the sugar industry lies in the hands of Youths and it’s imperative to create an enabling environment for them to fully participate in agriculture sector in align with Bottom -Up economic transformation Agenda (BETA).He urged stakeholders, Farmers, industry leaders, Policy makers and innovators to prioritize youth involvement, leveraging their digital and Entrepreneurship skills which stands a chance to unlock full potential of sugar industry. With these milestones, Kenya is steadily positioning itself as a global sugar exporter, thereby enhancing economic growth and national food security.
