Kenya’s Agriculture CS, Sen. Mutahi Kagwe addressed the 48th IFAD Governing Council in Rome, calling for sustainable investment at the 1st mile, where agricultural production begins. He emphasized the urgent need to empower the rural small-scale farmers, tackle food insecurity, and invest in climate resilience.

Sen. Kagwe highlighted the impact of climate change on Africa despite contributing to less than 3% of global carbon emissions.
He urged for fair funding policies and reforms in EU deforestation regulations to ensure African nations receive the support they need.

Recognizing Africa’s youthful population, he advocated for technology-driven solutions to modernize farming and attract young people to the sector.

Sen. Kagwe reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to strengthening value chains in coffee, tea, sugarcane, and cotton while also expanding opportunities in livestock farming.

He invited global investors to explore Kenya’s Leather Industrial Park and support the Kenya Veterinary Vaccines Production Institute (KEVEVAPI), a regional leader in vaccine manufacturing.

The CS called for global cooperation to improve access to farm inputs, enhance market conditions, and ensure no farmer is left behind.
