Livestock Development Principal Secretary Jonathan Mueke has said that the government is working on enabling environment for livestock production in the country which will lead to higher returns for farmers.
Mueke said this on 15th February, 2024 when he officially opened the Garissa County Joint exhibition for State Department for Livestock Development, organized by Kenya Dairy Board. The exhibition was aimed at training livestock farmers on how to keep livestock of quantity and quality that measures to the market demand.
He added that his State Department is keen on new aspects and interventions to farmers which include animal breeding, fodder farming, value addition, disease control, introduction of the farmer insurance program, the creation and operationalization of the Kenya Leather Development Council and the establishment of the regional Dairy processing plants closer to the farmers, for reduction of production costs.
Mueke reiterated that it is important for the pastoralists to add value to their livestock produce to fetch more money and adopt advanced value chain approaches to enhance commercialization and this is the only move that will create employment opportunities for thousands of people countywide by ensuring that they create local brands from their resources.
From the State Department For Livestock Development, Mueke was accompanied by CEO Kenya Dairy Board, Kenya Leather Development Council official, CEO KENTEK, Director Veterinary Services and Director Livestock Production among others.
